more communication, less words August 30, 2007

Communication, communication, communication is a mantra that follows us around wherever we are. How often do we hear the phrase (or something like it) “well if they had communicated that to me” or “if they had only told me“…..blah blah blah? On the other foot, the leader believes they have communicated and is thinking “why don’t they listen to me?” or “haven’t they heard what I have been saying for the last x years“. The committee solution is to expand the communication channels and to ask for more communication between the individuals or groups. STOP RIGHT THERE!
Is more communication the utopian solution to seeing organisations/churches and youth work programmes working better? What if the problem is not solved by more communication?
Personally, I do not believe that it is always MORE communication that solves the woes of staff teams in churches, youth ministries and organisations…. sometimes it may be LESS communication done better! The more words we use the more likely that your message may become diluted. There is no need to be verbose…..but a great need to be more succinct. On that note I will shut up!

On the flipside, 2 new members of staff (leaders of our theatre team) met for the first time in role and have some great new ideas to implement and bags of energy to make it happen. In the midst of this I met with a longstanding staff member to talk through future plans in one area of our youthwork and ways to overcome some large hurdles.
My brain is now tired from all the different thought processes and emotions of the day. This fast and furious day will bear much fruit in the future but right now I would like to lay down and sleep – difficulty is, too much coffee in the system!!!

spoke with someone this week who is struggling with some members of the team in which he works (nothing new there some of you cry!!) and the infighting to outdo each other. In reflecting on our conversation I came across this quote:
“The purpose of life is not to win. The purpose of life is to grow and to share. When you come to look back on all that you have done in life, you will get more satisfaction from the pleasure you have brought into other people’s lives than you will from the times that you outdid and defeated them.” Rabbi Harold Kushner

With desk printers it is so easy to do your own printing of cards and photographs these days. However, it is also good to have your projects printed professionally. MOO is one of the best services around and they are simple, easy and efficient. If you have a FLICKR account they are so simple it is beyond belief. My latest set of notecards have arrived and they are perfect; so well presented too! In case you have not noticed, I love MOO!

you go away for a couple of weeks and when you return the Boston Celtics have dona a mega trade and landed Monsieur Garnett. Suddenly the talk of the town and even getting press that rivals the Red Sox. They even have some TV time on next year american TV. The good news for me is that I will see the main man in action this October in the pre-season, so cool!
For those that are confused, it means that the once hallowed franchise has a couple of years to shoot for another championship – something that is 21 years overdue. And it just may be possible that Reggie Miller may come out of retirement to join the party. We may achieve nothing but once again the great celtics are the talk of the town!
