We may not put on a show like Beijing, but we will have great fun. Roll on 2012
taken for granted? August 20, 2008

It is one thing to be helpful and have a servant attitude but there are occasions where people abuse this and take things for granted. Today I have become very frustrated as a couple of things have happened that, in my humble opinion, have seen people abuse this priviledge and take things for granted. Unfortunately, it is not in my authority to deal with the situation but the consequences of the decision will impact me. The frustration was high and so I went and had a coffee, read a paper and realised that these light and momentary troubles are as nothing compared to what some people in the world are facing.
That said…….I do not like being taken for granted!

This last couple of weeks have seen such great spirit on behalf of the British Olympic Team. It is so exciting to see them achieve such lofty goals and the spirit of the nation has raised. There is also a recognition that money has helped spur the competitors and enabled them to compete at higher levels.
Nothing new here but there are the first rumblings of needs for more investment and greater financial support to help us achieve still more for 2012. The London Olympic bid has already impacted smaller charities and I must admit that these calls leave me a little more nervous about how these charities will fare if still more funding is diverted.
I want the British Olympic team to do well in 2012 but the thought of more funds being diverted from the charity sector has made me nervous…….am I right to be worried? IMHO we all need to consider the consequences of the need for Olympic success.

If you were to list the best piece of advice you were ever given, what would it be?
The best advice I received was from a good friend who said’
“Hey Roy, once in a while it is ok to break the rules, seriously – it is ok once in a while!“

there are occasions that I wonder why on earth we get involved with some events, activities etc. So often we are searching for the next big thing, the next high or a super time. IMHO all my best work has been done in the daily ongoing and consistent hard slog – admittedly the highs have been good, the big event a good kick up the rear, but it is the daily grind to success that has seen the most fruit. Young people who have matured into adulthood, dreamers who have had support as they achieve their dreams, the mentees who have seen their own lives transformed – not all because of me, but I have been grateful in being a part of their journey.

there are some contests that it is difficult to celebrate winning – some are just embarrasing. This is one competition that I would not choose to take part in – but it is a great hoot!!!

£3.5 million or $7 million for a new upgraded website for the English Parliament. Now I know why they need so much tax from us! I may not be the greatest techno head but it does not strike me as a worthwhile investment.

“We know what we need to do and we know why we should do it. But finding the discipline, commitment, energy and support to change often means that we never do.“ Not sure where this one is from.
“There are plenty of people who are miserable in their jobs for they have not listened to God’s call. And I would add that there are many christians who are not fulfilled in their spiritual lives because they have no sense of their gifts or purpose and they just run the mission field to save souls rather than to transform lives and communities using their gifts and those of the people they live with and among. Both lead to emptiness and burnout.“ Shane Clairbourne

the last month has been a really tough one. The charity that I work for has struggled financially for a long while now and we have struggled through the tough times but each month has seen a stretch to pay salaries. As a result, an emergency meeting of the Trustees was called and my role is disappearing in a restructuring of the charity so from end of September I will need to find a new employer.
The decision was made easy as the Trustees heard my recommendations and have followed that advice – but somehow it is much more difficult to live through the experience than I ever anticipated. The trustees have been most supportive and found a way to keep me on payroll for the three months of looking for further work – so far a new role has not emerged but I am not without hope – something will transpire and it will be a good thing. Such a great opportunity – yet a tough place to dwell. Life is full of these paradox.
