“Silence is argument carried out by other means” Che Guevera.
“Silence is often misinterpreted but never misquoted” Anon.
“Silence is interpreted by some as disinterest” Black
The use of silence can be wide and varied yet it may provoke a variety of responses from those who ‘receive’ the silence. Context must not be discounted from the equation yet some experiences of this last week have shown that even when words do not pass the lips a decision to remain silent can be interpreted in very different ways.
Why is this? How can silence be interpreted so differently? Is it because people choose to view the silence through their own filters? Is it because people had drawn their own conclusions and the silence just reinforced this opinion? Had other signals been given and read? One thing that is certain, silence conveys some very important messages – less certain is what messages are received by others when a silent route is chosen.
What messages are you conveying?
