It is not the mountain top

We often equate success with reaching the top of he mountain – we set goals and once reached we can bask in glory. The truth is that this is only a part of the story. This last few weeks, climbers are using a window in the weather to scale Everest – so many that there are queues of people in places. As people climb, they can see the bodies of the fallen – some who never conquered the summit, some who did.
Success is not found by conquering the mountain alone – success is found in returning safely, the mountain top is just a junction on the journey. It can be too easy to be seduced by a ‘false success’ – returning home is the important thing. Success is the journey, not the junction on the way.

Strength equals weakness

Place called comfortable?

It was the wonderful Pip Wilson (beautiful human) who said that “growth does not reside in a place called comfortable”. So often, we are looking for comfortable places but we need to be careful that we do not mean ‘dead’ as it is unlikely that we are happy their either.
Comfortable places involve stretching, testing and trying – these are not necessarily easy but they will be places we’re we feel comfortable, we will feel at home.

We all long to have a place we call home, a place where we belong and a place where we can ‘be ourselves’.
For the first 20years of my life, home was in Liverpool – it is still a city that I love……but it is no longer home.
These days my place of belonging is London…..it is a different city but one that is home. In the days of trouble, my memories remind me (falsely) of the calm and serene days back in Liverpool – the truth is that, wherever I am, there will be days of trouble. The issue to address is whether I am prepared to work through the problems and release the hope of a better future.
London is home…..and despite some of the light and momentary troubles…..is the place that I belong.

Serving?

How easy is it to serve with no agenda? Is it possible?
Service is regularly bound by preset agendas, it is unavoidable. The question is whether we are serving on behalf of others best interests or whether we are seeking to serve our own.

Meeting Overload

We are so used to meetings that we may sometimes find ourselves in situations where we diary meetings because we can think of no other way in which to operate. If you are in this place, you may find yourself in meeting overload.
It is not always necessary to have a meeting in order to get the job done or to communicate with the team. Time is not a limitless resource – unnecessary meetings destroy motivation, necessary meetings engage with people.

Too many people seek to hide and live very different in the private life to their public life. The difficulty with this approach is that the truth will always be revealed – the true self will come to the surface. You may hide for a time but at some point the real ‘you’ will be revealed.
Guard your hearts and minds – then you will never have to fear as the real you will be clear in both the public and private spaces.
